How NIBULON Rebuilt Its Business During the War: The Role of Digital Transformation and Reliable Connectivity

Up till February 24, 2022, NIBULON was one of Ukraine’s leaders in grain exports. The company’s competitive advantage was built on a unique logistics model: its own river fleet, the country’s largest transshipment terminal in Mykolaiv, and a network of grain elevator complexes across Ukraine. It was this integrated infrastructure that enabled the efficient delivery of Ukrainian grain to global markets.

The full-scale war radically changed these conditions. Mykolaiv found itself in an active combat zone, river logistics were effectively blocked, and part of the company’s infrastructure was lost. NIBULON faced not merely operational difficulties, but the need to rethink its entire business model.

The response was a large-scale digital transformation. Over the past few years, NIBULON has implemented more than 40 IT projects, created a digital ecosystem for business management, and has been steadily transforming into a data-driven agri-logistics platform where key decisions are made based on data.

In this model, reliable telecommunications infrastructure becomes a critical element. As digital business can operate only when data moves continuously between production sites, grain elevators, logistics operations, cloud infrastructure, and digital services for customers.

From physical infrastructure to a digital ecosystem

NIBULON operates in four main areas:

  • agricultural production;
  • logistics;
  • grain processing and storage;
  • trading.

The company works with thousands of Ukrainian farmers and manages an extensive network of production and logistics facilities.

Such a structure requires a unified digital environment that connects all areas of the business and ensures their interaction.

That is why one of the company’s strategic priorities has been to ensure business continuity and the ability to adapt quickly to new risks.

First, the foundation

The foundation of NIBULON’s digital transformation was the modernization of its IT infrastructure. In recent years, the company has:

  • upgraded around 90% of its network equipment;
  • built a high-speed network with modern perimeter protection;
  • organized connection redundancy through two independent channels – fiber optic and satellite connectivity;
  • deployed more than 350 Wi-Fi access points at production sites and offices;
  • modernized more than 1,100 workstations.

Critical services were moved to cloud infrastructure. Under wartime conditions, this decision helps maintain operations even if physical infrastructure is damaged.

At the same time, the company is developing industrial automation. Data from equipment, vehicles, the fleet, and production processes is integrated into a single system, forming the basis for real-time business management.

Digitalization as a new management model

At NIBULON, more and more processes are being built around working with data and the rapid exchange of information between departments.

One such solution was the transition to a centralized architecture. Local servers at individual sites were gradually replaced by services accessible through a single digital platform, regardless of the user’s location.

This approach makes it possible to:

  • minimize the risk of data loss;
  • restore services quickly;
  • ensure unified operating standards;
  • scale digital solutions across the company’s entire network.

In fact, digitalization has become a new operational model for managing the business.

Why reliable connectivity became critical

When a business operates in a data-driven management model, the data transmission channel becomes as important an asset as a grain elevator or a production site.

NIBULON’s facilities are located across Ukraine, with many of them in remote areas. Additional challenges include the risk of infrastructure damage and power outages caused by military attacks.

At the same time, digital services must operate continuously:

  • corporate ERP systems;
  • production management systems;
  • logistics services;
  • cloud infrastructure;
  • backup systems;
  • digital services for partners.

For many of these services, it is not enough to simply have an internet connection. Low latency, stable performance, and the ability to provide channel redundancy are also essential.

That is why the quality of telecommunications infrastructure directly affects the continuity of business processes.

The role of GigaTrans in the digital ecosystem

To connect part of its cloud infrastructure, including AWS services, NIBULON uses GigaTrans data transmission channels.

In practice, the telecommunications network has become one of the elements of the company’s digital foundation, enabling interaction between production facilities, corporate systems, and cloud services.

According to the company’s Head of IT, reliability and stability were among the key selection criteria.

This became especially clear during mass blackouts.

We had no issues with the channels. The services are delivered reliably 24/7. When Kyiv experienced blackouts and there was no electricity for up to 35 hours, GigaTrans kept working. For me, this is a key indicator, says Volodymyr Panasiuk, Head of IT at NIBULON.

The company also emphasizes the quality of interaction with the provider’s team.

I like the communication with the support team and managers. They can help, resolve issues, and provide guidance not only on connectivity, but also on other services, Volodymyr adds.

Digital transformation as a new competitive advantage

Over more than four years of war, NIBULON has significantly rebuilt its operating model. The company continues to modernize its business model, where data, automation, and digital services become the foundation of efficiency.

Before the war, its competitive advantage was its unique physical logistics infrastructure. Today, that advantage is complemented by a digital core that brings agricultural production, logistics, grain elevator operations, and trading together into a single management system.

For this operating model, reliable connectivity is part of the business’s critical infrastructure. It determines the company’s operational continuity, speed of adaptation to new challenges, and resilience of key processes.
