GigaCloud’s cloud infrastructure powers services used every day by more than 20 million people in Ukraine and beyond. The cloud provider’s clients — hundreds of Ukrainian companies and government institutions — expect maximum speed, stability, and security. After all, every minute of downtime can mean interrupted government services, financial losses for businesses, and reputational damage. In this case study, we explain how GigaCloud handles these challenges and what role telecommunications infrastructure plays in this process.
GigaCloud is a Ukrainian cloud provider that helps companies move to the cloud with confidence: simply, clearly, and with support at every stage. Since 2016, GigaCloud has delivered cloud projects for more than 1,500 companies. The company offers clients public and private cloud infrastructure, business continuity services, AI and cybersecurity solutions, and more.
Behind the scenes of the cloud provider’s delivery team
The Delivery Department at GigaCloud works in two areas at once: building new services from scratch for specific client needs and operating already deployed cloud solutions.
Our clients are different: some need basic infrastructure, while others require complex solutions with specific services. That is why we work with various partners to cover non-standard requests. Our team is expected to ensure that services operate without failure, and this requires a team with deep expertise that can resolve any technical issues, says Ihor Chornobai, Head of the Delivery Department at GigaCloud.
Telecommunications solutions from a single source
In 2016, the company had only one cluster in Kyiv — several servers combined into a single system. Today, GigaCloud operates hundreds of virtualized servers across five data centers in three availability zones: Kyiv, Lviv, and Warsaw.
In addition to physical infrastructure, communication channels play a key role in the cloud provider’s business. They are what allow clients and end users to access cloud services. GigaCloud works with many telecommunications operators to build primary and backup communication channels.
However, since the cloud provider was founded, its main partner has been the telecommunications operator GigaTrans. Both companies are part of GIGAGROUP, so GigaCloud knew the quality of GigaTrans services firsthand. In addition to secure L2 channels, which currently provide connectivity between five data centers, GigaCloud uses high-speed internet from GigaTrans, as well as DDoS protection, enabling the provider’s clients to ensure the uninterrupted operation of their cloud services.
Having a single provider for telecommunications solutions also allows the team to avoid bureaucracy and receive support directly from technical specialists. In many cases, response speed is what determines the fault tolerance of services.
Redundancy as a strategy
The key requirements for GigaCloud were channel capacity and redundancy. For a cloud provider, fault tolerance and reliability are the foundation of the business. That is why all GigaTrans connections were implemented with redundancy, while routes are constantly checked to ensure there are no single points of failure. This allows GigaCloud to guarantee service continuity for its clients under any conditions.
Initially, GigaCloud used GigaTrans solutions only in the Ukrainian market. But after the telecommunications operator entered the European market — and following an incident with local providers in Poland — the companies’ cooperation reached a new level.
Once in Warsaw, we faced a double failure of L2 channels provided by local operators that connected our data centers. Usually, redundancy saves the situation, but this time both the primary and backup channels went down simultaneously. It was a case where neither Plan A nor Plan B worked, recalls Ihor Chornobai, Head of the Delivery Department at GigaCloud. However, the GigaTrans technical team quickly brought up a new channel for us and restored connectivity within hours. We kept this third channel even after recovery — as an additional layer of protection.
Another important component of client service stability is data protection. GigaTrans specialists also implemented a DDoS protection service for the team.
The protection works locally. For example, in Lviv, traffic immediately passes through the filtering system. If an attack is larger in scale, traffic can be redirected for scrubbing to another site — for example, Kyiv — and then returned in filtered form. In this way, clients receive several layers of protection: from local solutions to more global tools. This guarantees business continuity for clients. A separate advantage for the team is the ability to manage service settings independently through a personal account.
We have a personal account where we can add networks for protection, remove them, or configure mitigations. This saves time, because we do not have to contact the provider and wait for a response every time. An engineer can log in and make changes immediately, says Ihor Chornobai.
Thanks to this flexibility, GigaCloud gains both control and speed in critical situations.
Cloud infrastructure reliability without compromise
It is critically important for us that clients do not experience interruptions in service operations. That is why we assess not only an operator’s technical capabilities, but also the quality of its technical support. Fast response and the contractor’s readiness to find non-standard IT solutions are what make our cooperation with GigaTrans effective and reliable, says Ihor Chornobai, Head of the Delivery Department at GigaCloud.
Thanks to this approach, GigaCloud builds partnerships that allow it to guarantee businesses and government customers secure, scalable, and stable infrastructure under any conditions.
